Blog 11: Lesson 1 Reflection
1. What are you most proud of in your lesson, and why?
I was most proud of my hook in my lesson. I thought it was pretty clever, and I managed to make the audience smile, which always brightens my day.
2. What assessment would you give yourself on your lesson? Explain why you earned that grade using evidence from the component contract.
I would give myself an AP at the most. I engaged the audience with my hook, cited my sources, mentioned my mentor ship, and made eye contact. Due to the fact that I didn't meet the time limit though, 1 minute off, so close, the only grade I can receive is a NC.
3. If you could go back, what would you change about your lesson? How can you use that knowledge to give a better Lesson 2?
If I could go back, I would've first: have at least two dress rehearsals to better prepare myself and ease my nerves, second: better equip myself with ready to go flashcards, third: put my props to better use, and fourth: slap myself silly the previous night to remind myself to not mess up Lesson 2 as I did in Lesson 1. By using this knowledge, I shall better prepare myself for Lesson 2 and make sure I present to the best of my abilities.

Blog 10 - Interview 2 Reflection
1. Please explain how you are spending your mentorship time (Is it at a workplace or somewhere else? Are you shadowing? Are you able to do tasks that are meaningfully related to the topic? If so, what? Are there other people who are experts in the location? Etc...)
I spend my mentorship time at a health care clinic that my mentor works at. I usually shadow her as she works and she will explain some information on how to treat a certain patient, however, there are times when Dr. Rosado asks me to make copies of certain forms she hands out to patients and/or their parents.
2. How did you find your mentor? How did you convince this person to help you?
My mentor is my pediatrician. I had once spoke to her on how I had thought of pursing a career in medicine. She had stated that if I had any questions that I could come talk to her. Upon learning that I was required to have a mentor for this project, she was the first person who came to mind. When I had the opportunity during the summer, I called her and asked if she would be my mentor. She said that she was more than happy to be my mentor, and we constructed a schedule on the days I would be able to visit and volunteer at her working environment.
3. How would you rate your comfort level with your mentor at this point in your relationship? How does this relate to the time you've spent so far at mentorship/with this person
On a scale of 1-10, I would say that the comfort level with my mentor at this point in my relationship is a 9 or a 10. Considering that my mentor is also my, and many other patients' pediatrician, my time spent with her as my mentor has been pleasant.
4. What went well in this interview? Why do you think so? What do you still need to improve? How do you know? How will you go about it?
I conducted the interview in my mentor's office. I think that was probably the best choice I made due to the fact that no one interrupted while the interview was in progress. I was able to interview my mentor without any distractions. Any improvements would have to revolve around more thought provoking questions and follow up questions. I will have to come up with better questions and pay better attention when listening to the people I interview to make follow up questions.

Blog 9 - Advisory Prep 3
Please copy these questions and answer them in your own blog. Don't forget an image to promote interest.
We'll have a house discussion in place of a research check this Friday to check in on how things are going.
1. State whether or not you currently have a mentor, and what the status of your interview is with that person (I have completed the interview, I have scheduled the interview, I have not scheduled the interview, etc).
I currently have a mentor, her name is Dr. Mayra Rosado. I have completed the interview.
2. At this point, your research is probably guiding your studies toward more specific areas within your topic. Name the area or two you find most promising and explain your reasons.
The areas I find most promising are neonatology, pediatric psychiatry, or developmental pediatrics. Neonatology was a topic my mentor was interested in studying during her time learning general pediatrics. Neonatology involves treating pre-mature babies with issues such as respiratory and cardiac. I had respiratory issues when I was a baby, and I would like to help those facing the same issues I once had. I am fascinated with psychiatry and would love to possibly major in pediatric psychiatry. Developmental pediatrics is similar to both fields, therefore, allowing me to study both topics that I am interested in.
3. What kinds of sources do you think will help you in the next month to gain more research depth? Where will you go to get them?
4. Write down a possible EQ. Please don't worry about wording other than ensuring that it provides the option for multiple correct answers. At this point, the senior team is most interested in understanding your thought process.
A possible essential question is what is the best method of approach when handling a new patient?

Sources that will help me in the next month to gain more
research depth include articles and books. I will receive these sources through
the Cal Poly Pomona archives as well as searches through the Internet.

Blog 8: Independent Component 1 Proposal
As usual, include a visual, and copy #1-4 with your answers in your own blog entry.
What is it? Independent Component 1 is an opportunity for you to add a dimension of creativity and/or an additional outlet for research. The goal of the component is for you to explore your topic in more depth with this component. On February 6, 2015, you will be turning in the following to your blog to prove completion of this component:
What is it? Independent Component 1 is an opportunity for you to add a dimension of creativity and/or an additional outlet for research. The goal of the component is for you to explore your topic in more depth with this component. On February 6, 2015, you will be turning in the following to your blog to prove completion of this component:
- Section documenting hours for Independent Component 1 in Senior Project Hours link (this should be documented regularly and can be spot checked throughout the year).
- Evidence of the 30 hours of work (e.g. transcript, essays, tests, art work, photographs) as digital artifacts.
- Blog reflecting on the work completed
To get your idea approved now, please answer the following questions:
1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
3. Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
4. Update your Senior Project Hours log.
To be approved, your proposal should be supported with details and examples for the senior team to understand what you plan to do.
1. Describe in detail what you plan to do for your 30 hours.
For the thirty hours that need to be completed I intend to spend time gathering information on every single vaccine necessary for children and adolescents. This information will be recorded and presented on a presentation board for all patients to see. The information included on the board will be the name of the vaccine, it's purpose, when it's suppose to be received, and when it can be received if missed. The information will coincide with a schedule for every vaccine and an image for each vaccine.
2. Discuss how or what you will do to meet the expectation of showing 30 hours of evidence.
As I have stated previously, I will creating somewhat of a presentation board with every single vaccine and in its information in pediatrics. The board will have the vaccine, its purpose, the time period of when it should be received, and when it should be received if missing the initial time frame. I will document my progress through photos and the Senior Project Hours log.
3. Explain how what you will be doing will help you explore your topic in more depth.
The topic for my senior project is pediatrics. From what I've learned so far during my time with my mentor is there is a lot of memorization. One of the main pieces of material to memorize for any forms of medicine are the multiple vaccinations required for each and every patient. Even then, it's difficult to remember every single vaccine and its information. Therefore this informative board will provide information on every single vaccine for pediatric patients. Not only will I learn about these vaccines, but the board will be there as somewhat of a reference sheet for the patients, their parents, and even the medical staff.
4. Update your Senior Project Hours log.
It is possible to locate my Senior Project Hours log on my blog under the Links section of the blog.

Blog 7 - Second Interview Preparation
The purpose of the second interview is to justify your mentor as an expert in the field. You will be asking them at least 5 questions about their background and/or the background of the organization or company where they work.
1. Who is your mentor and where do they work? If their workplace does not reflect their expertise, what makes them an expert?
My mentor is Dr. Mayra Rosado. She is a 1988 graduate from Harvard University's medical school. She did her medical residency in pediatrics from 1988 to 1991 at the UCLA Medical Center, and she works at Health Care Partners in El Monte as its pediatrician, as well as other Health Care Partners facilities in the Los Angeles area. Dr. Rosado is also affiliated with White Memorial Medical Center, Beverley Hospital, Monterey Park Hospital, and Glendale Medical Hospital & Health Center. She has been working at Health Care Partners for 27 years.
2. What five questions will you ask them about their background?
The questions that I shall ask my mentor about her background history are the following:
- What would you say helped lead you down the path of becoming a pediatrician/What inspired you?
- Which classes were the most enjoyable & most tedious when studying to become a doctor?
- How many years has Health Care Partners been around, and how long has it been a healthcare provider?
- To your knowledge, what is the percentage of patients that use Health Care Partners versus other healthcare providers in Southern California?
- Why did you decide to work at Health Care Partners instead of any other medical facilities such as Kaiser or LA County General Hospital?

Blog 6 - Advisory Prep
Please copy these questions and answer them in your own blog. Don't forget an image to promote interest.
We'll have a house discussion in place of a research check this Friday to check in on how things are going.
1. What has worked well for you concerning senior project this year? What has made it a positive experience for you?
Concerning the senior project, the main part that's been working well for me is my time volunteering at the Health Care Partners in El Monte. I enjoy spending time with my mentor, witnessing her help her patients. Plus I am learning a lot of information with each patient that she works with.
2. What are you finding difficult concerning senior project? How can you adapt to make that portion work better for you? How might the senior team help?
Concerning the senior project, the main part that I have been having difficult with is making a good essential question and finding more resources I can use for research. A possible way I can make these portions work better for me is possibly asking my uncle for any medical books or journals I could borrow from him. The senior team could help me look over potential essential questions that I have thought up, and then decide which one will be my essential question.

Blog 5 - Interview 1 Reflection
Please copy these questions and answer them in your own blog. Attach a link to your video or sound file. As usual, you'll want an appropriate image to lead this.
1. What is the most important thing I learned from the interview? Is there anything I would do differently for other interviews?
I would have to say that the most important thing I learned from this interview is that I should write down what the interviewee says as I question them. For the next interviews, I will have them in a quieter area, and I will have a notepad & pencil on standby to mark down the interviewee's answers.
2. Did I get additional resources and contacts? What is the most useful? Why?
From this one interview I did get some additional resources and contacts. The most useful would have to be the knowledge of a nearby facilities that I could visit for possible volunteer work. With this knowledge, I now have the opportunity to expand my knowledge of medicine by possibly volunteering at these medical facilities.
3. What makes my interviewee qualified to help me?
My interviewee has been a vocational nurse for several years and has a vast knowledge of medicine. Even though he might not be a pediatrician, he still works in the medical field, and there are many similarities considering both fields of medicine derive from medicine itself.

Blog 4 - House Advisory Prep
Write a short explanation of what you are
hoping to accomplish through your senior project topic. You will be
sharing out on what you've written here with your house advisory and classmates
on Friday, 9/11.
As days draw nearer to the end of my time as a high school
student, the road to college holds open many doors for me to choose from to find
a career that I will enjoy for years to come. The career of my choosing is being a pediatrician.
To help me achieve the goal of becoming a pediatrician, I am
currently volunteering at the Health Care Partners located in the city of
El Monte. My mentor is a trusted member of the Health Care Partners crew. Her
name is Dr. Rosado. During my time at Health Care Partners and my journey
towards completing my senior project, I hope to accomplish the goals I have
set. These goals include the following: learning the different types of
vaccines, how to approach a patient, the education needed to become a
pediatrician, etc. By learning as much as I can of my topic through this
project, I will be better prepared when studying this topic in college.
